'There is a sense of pride in the quality of learning in the school from staff and from pupils'

Good and Improving

GCSE Results Day 2016

Congratulations to Springfield students who are today celebrating a top-notch set of GCSE results! Provisional analysis indicates that 72% of students achieved more than five GCSE qualifications at grade A*-C; 66% achieved the ‘gold standard’ (including English and Mathematics); and a very encouraging 68% achieved the new performance measure of A*-C in Maths and English in the more challenging GCSE courses. 19% of the GCSE grades achieved across all subjects were A* or A, just beating last year’s outcome. Top attaining subjects for A*-C grades include Biology (99%), Chemistry (100%), Drama (97%), French (95%) and Physics (100%). Headteacher, Sara Spivey, commented “Results day is always a wonderful celebration for the school community. It’s delightful to see the students being rewarded for their efforts. They worked very hard and we wish them every success and happiness for the future. I’d like also to thank the teachers and support staff for the extraordinary support that they provided for the students throughout their courses.” Mrs Goldsmith, Head of Achievement, stated “I’m truly pleased to see how well the students have done. I shall really miss this year group! Well done Year 11!”.

Year 11 Prefects were put through their paces today thanks to the British Army. Prefects were split into 7 groups and assigned command tasks focusing on leadership, communication, initiative and task completion.  The command tasks took place on the school field. The Prefects responded well to these tasks and worked well (and quickly) together. Thanks to Army Outreach team based in Aldershot.

GCSE Exam Results Day

On GCSE exam results day (Thursday 25th August 2016) ex-Year 11 pupils can come in at 10am to collect their results and Year 10 can collect their results from 11am. Any collection requests must be made in writing by the student. Please also note that every year we also ask a few ex-Year 11 pupils to come in a bit earlier to pose for a photo. Please do not worry if you are not contacted to come in early, this is a random selection of pupils who have made good progress.

School Meals - Increase in Price

Please be aware that from September 2016 the price of a school meal will increase from £2.00 to £2.05. Portsmouth Council have confirmed that they have been able to keep the price of a school meal at £2.00 for the past six years and in their contract negotiations with ISS, have worked hard to keep any price increase to a minimum. The £2.05 price of a school meal will remain in place until the end of the current contract with ISS (August 2019). This represents very good value and compares favourably with other local authority areas.

Year 7 STEM Day

Year 7 as well as some Year 8 and 9 pupils have enjoyed getting involved in an array of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities today thanks to outside STEM ambassors, BAE and our Science and D.T. departments. Pupils visited a selection of sessions throughout the day including a hilarious and inspiring 'Science is Magic' show courtesy of Ian B. Dunne, Maths experiments which involved stretching edible jelly worms, a BAE led session which set pupils the challenge of creating their own sustainable house models (using lego), as well as a fun forensic science activity in the afternoon overseen by the Science department. Thank you to all our visitors and staff for a fun-packed informative and interesting day!

Live Music at Lunch Break

Springfield Music pupils have been promoting music to fellow students over the past couple of weeks with special lunchtime performances on the Treble Clef Chef decking area.  Pupils have been enjoying eating al fresco with some great background tunes.  It is great to hear the talented musicians play/sing so well, compliments to all the pupils involved.

Portsmouth Aviation Work Experience

Portsmouth Aviation Work Experience By Joe Bendell, 10D and Ethan Redhead, 10D

Our work experience placement was at Portsmouth Aviation. The company gave us the task of designing a product and presenting it to a group of directors and teachers, one of them was Ms Bryant, a Science teacher from our school. There were six of us, us two from Springfield, two from Mayfield School, one from Crestwood School and one other on an apprenticeship. We had numerous talks from different members of staff including Security, Engineering, Design, Finance, Stress and Management. Each of these helped us with our final product. The only task after that was to present our product to the audience we had attracted. Overall we got a view into the workplace and confidence so we feel ready for life after school.

Thank you to Portsmouth Aviation for this opportunity.
